Radio Microphones
Radio microphones are standard equipment in many churches and are used in a variety of ways. It is not uncommon for a church to have several operating at the same time, causing conflicts when two or more systems interact. The resulting interference, called Inter-modulation, occurs not only at the transmitting frequency of each system but also at a number of other frequencies.
A local Cell Site or TV transmitter can also create Inter-modulation problems which may show up as noisy reception or as dropouts when the radio microphones are being used. If you are experiencing this you may think your equipment has very short range.
Manufacturers are very aware of these problems and design their systems to avoid Inter-modulation but if products from other manufacturers or other types of broadcast are located nearby you may still face problems.
Tools:
From the Shure web site you can download a piece of software called Wireless Workbench.
When you enter the frequencies of your microphones, the frequencies for local TV and other transmission sources, the software will suggest the frequencies that you should choose. It is best suited to Shure products but may also be used with most other products.
High end Shure “R” products can interact directly over a proprietary network and use the Shure R series wireless systems to do a scan of the frequencies to locate the local interference sources.
At CRC we have TV allocation charts and a Wireless Scanner to help us set up Radio Microphones and we can offer assistance if your church is experiencing problems.
