Living from the Inner Core
8. The Causes and Cure of Worry 51 min
Matthew 6:25-34
Many anxieties have a spiritual cause.
Jesus said, do not worry about . . .
- your life
- what you will eat or drink
- your body
- what you will wear
This section begins in verse 19. Your treasure is anything you are preoccupied with. It will eventually become your master.
Laying up treasure on earth triggers worry about preserving, protecting and caring for it.
If I lay up treasure in Heaven, I can trust God to take care of it.
The consequences of having treasure on earth or treasure in Heaven.
Features of treasure on earth:
(that is, human centred living)
- Temporary. They will be enjoyed only while we are on this earth. It gets devalued, corroded, stolen.
- Troublesome. The person who focuses on earthly treasure will be a worrier.
See Luke 12:16-34
1 Timothy 6:9-10
Those who want to get rich fall into temptation, a trap, ruin, destruction. Many griefs.
Verse 32 “the pagans run after these things.” Those who do not have God as their master. Your Heavenly Father knows what you need.
Features of treasure in Heaven:
- Permanent. Verse 20; no devaluation, no corrosion, no burglars.
- Peaceful. Verses 25-27; you are more valuable than the birds and see how God looks after them. But Knowing God provides does not mean we sit back and do nothing. We still have to do what we are able to. See 2 Thessalonians 3:10.
This is living on earth with Heaven in mind. Seeking the agenda of Heaven. The benefits will be enjoyed for eternity.
Do not worry about life and dying; Christ will be there to welcome you home.
In this life, we have a short window of opportunity to lay up treasure that we will enjoy forever.
