Our Future in this Digital World

CRC is at a crossroads.

We do not have sufficient funds to meet our operating costs. Changes in the ways people use media are forcing us to review our activities.

A large donation in June will cover the shortfall in donations for another four months, giving the Board and staff a little more time to explore options for the future of CRC.

We want you to work with us by praying, giving and telling us why you support this work.

The Impact of Digital Technology
Digital production tools, iPods and other mobile devices have changed the world of media. CRC is not the only organisation trying to find the best response. Even the largest radio, TV and print companies are struggling to meet the demands of users who want information and entertainment now, no matter where they are.

The changes have touched all areas of CRC’s operation, with traditional outlets closing and new doors opening. Staff have watched familiar tasks disappear and worked hard to acquire the skills demanded by emerging markets.

You’ll find more about this in John Lindsay’s Comment below.

The CRC Board is considering options for our future in this digital world, where the internet offers global coverage for creative audio and video productions.

Rebuild the Ministry
One option is to rebuild CRC from its existing base. We have a solid base - studios, staff and donors – on which to create a better media ministry. The Board would search for a new leader and an injection of funds to cover reestablishment expenses. With fresh leadership and additional finance we could tackle new projects and improve our communication with existing and potential supporters. It would be a challenging process but it would reflect the bold faith of those who started this work.

Reorganise as a Smaller Operation
As a second option, we could reorganise CRC as a smaller operation. This would severely limit our ability to meet the opportunities of the digital age. The excellent studios built 35 years ago are not being used to their full advantage and the work could continue on a smaller scale in different premises. We would convert the audio Library to a digital format available on the internet through Resonate and continue to loan DVDs by mail.

As a donor and prayer partner, you have made an investment in the ministry and we would welcome your comments on its future.

Please tell us why you support the work of CRC.
Are you willing to support a plan to rebuild CRC by donating more money or helping find a new leader?

Do you have any other comments?

Phone, email, write or join us in discussion online on FaceBook as soon as possible.

Charles Price
Living From the Inner Core  (V1058 to V1061)

A series of studies in Matthew 6

We all face the same question: Am I satisfied with the temporary rewards of earth or do I want to build permanent treasure in heaven?

The treasure we accumulate on earth causes trouble because it gets devalued, corroded and stolen – and it will be lost when we die.

The treasure we lay up in heaven is secure, it never loses its value and it lasts for ever.

V1058-1 The Unrighteous Acts of Righteousness      43min
Matthew 6:1
Charles explains what acts of righteousness are. If your actions are designed to enhance your reputation and attract the attention of other people, you have your reward now. God sees the righteous acts done in secret and offers an eternal reward.

V1058-2 The Grace of Giving      45min
Matthew 6:1-4
If I give in public to be seen by others, I have my reward now. If I give in secret, God will lay up a reward for me in heaven.

V1059-1 Effective Praying      45min
Matthew 6:5-8
Charles considers three questions. Why pray? Why pray privately? Why pray confidently?

V1059-2 The Disciples’ Prayer      51min
Matthew 6:9-13
A model for effective and good praying. Prayer that is about God first and our needs second.

V1060-1 Forgiving Others      56min
Matthew 6:14-15
Charles considers three questions. Why should we forgive? When should we forgive? How should we forgive?

V1060-2 Fasting and Self Denial      44min
Matthew 6:16-18
Fasting as an act of self denial that may help bring us closer to God.

V1061-1 Your Money and Your Life      39min
Matthew 6:19-24
We are all motivated by something. If you focus on accumulating money, it will become your master.

V1061-2 The Causes and Cure of Worry      51min
Matthew 6:25-34
Many anxieties have a spiritual cause. If we focus on laying up treasure in heaven we will not worry about life, food, our body and our clothes.

COMMENT - by John Lindsay CRC’s Operations Director

Recent programmes about the history of Television in New Zealand have stirred dusty memories.

Like many in my generation, I stood outside shop windows watching snowy, black and white pictures.

My parents installed their first TV after I left home and I remember feeling a little cheated at the time. Now, I realise I had a rich childhood without that box in the corner.

My own children grew up with TV from about the time they started school but because of my interest in computers, they also had access to this technology from a young age.

Today, my grandchildren would find it hard to comprehend a world without mobile phones, the internet and iPods.

Nearly fifteen years ago, CRC bought its first digital audio production system. Everyone in the radio department had to rethink their job but the new technology gave us enormous flexibility and enabled us to improve the quality of our work.

More recently, the internet and mobile players such as the iPod have changed the rules for delivering material to our audience. There are so many factors to consider, no one has come up with a strategy that guarantees success. And just when it seems you have a solution, the situation changes yet again.

CRC is not immune from these uncertainties.

Radio stations that once took hundreds of programmes from CRC every year are no longer broadcasting. New outlets have emerged, mostly in local radio, but they tend to want different styles of production.

We have responded with initiatives such as Popology; the Resonate online library and media management service; and computer-based services for measuring and analysing acoustics to help churches deliver better sound to their congregation.

In all this we continue to look to God for wisdom and direction. We also need you as a partner, praying for us and supporting us financially because the best way to do God’s work is through fellowship with His people.
